The Madera boys tennis team headed into the Central Section team tennis playoffs as the No. 10 seed matched up against the No. 7 seeded team in Liberty High of Bakersfield.
While a 3-6 loss ended the Coyotes team playoff hopes, the doubles tandem of Daniel Sheeter and Nick Cook are still making a legitimate claim to being the No. 1 doubles team in the section.
Sheeter won his No. 1 singles match against Liberty's Joel Saslaw 6-4, 6-0 while Cook won the No. 2 match defeating Roger Priuett 6-1, 6-0.
Gurbir Samran gave his opponent a battle in the No. 3 singles match before losing 5-7, 3-6 while Jerry Ramon, Steven Valerio and Shahzad Azair lost the No. 4 through 6 matches.
Sheeter and Cook, who improved to 18-2 on the season and have received the No. 3 seed in the Valley doubles playoffs then faced off against the No. 4 seeded team from Liberty in Saslaw and Priuett. After a close 7-5 win in the first set, Sheeter and Cook turned up the heat in the second set winning handily by the score of 6-0.
"Daniel and Nick really handled their opponents in this match," said Madera head coach David Ramirez. "The quality of their play together has improved dramatically and I am excited to see what they can do together in the playoffs."
The No. 2 doubles team Samran and Ramon lost 4-6, 3-6 while the No. 3 team of Jonathan Powell and Harjeet Singh dropped their match 0-6, 4-6.
Sheeter and Cook will begin their quest for a Valley doubles title Saturday at either Clovis West or Buchanan High.
