Looking at the bright side, Madera Coyote cross country coach Russ Stanford doesn’t have to get up at 4 a.m. Saturday morning to set up the course at Eastman Lake for the annual Madera Invitational.

Because of the partial federal shutdown, Eastman Lake will close at 10 p.m. Friday night and the Madera Invitational will be moved from Saturday morning to Friday at 2 p.m.

“They told me, because of the government shutdown, they were shutting down the park over the weekend,” Stanford said. “They just don’t have the personnel over the weekend. We’ll be able to set up the course under sunlight.”

Stanford called the Army Corps of Engineers at Eastman Lake and asked to move the meet to Friday afternoon. They agreed...
