Hawks get walk-off league victory over Panthers

Shelby Johnson had gone hitless at the plate all game.

Twice, the Liberty right fielder went to the plate and faced Washington Union’s right-hander Anissia Munoz on Friday, and three times she crushed the ball hard on the ground, only to have it meet the brick wall of third baseman Hanna Klein for a difficult out.

It seemed fitting that after the Hawks (7-1 North Sequoia League) flew out to a 3-0 lead, only to have the Panthers (12-19, 4-4 NSL) claw their way back in to tie the game in the top of the fifth, that with two outs and two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning, Johnson, a senior, stepped to the plate for redemption.

Munoz, pitching the complete game for the Panthers, delivered a fastball right down the middle that Johnson floated into center field...
