Second half surge leads Coyotes

REEDLEY — The Madera Coyotes boys basketball team saw its eight-point first quarter lead dwindle to four, but a nine-point run led to a 67-44 victory Tuesday on the opening day of the Immanuel Boys Basketball Tournament.

The Riverdale Cowboys cut the Coyotes’ lead to 34-30 with 51.1 seconds left in the first half. For the rest of the game, the Coyotes outscored the Cowboys 33-14 to cruise to a 17-point victory.

I thought the first half, we were going too quick,” head coach Michael Hawkins said. “Offensively, we needed to settle down to make stronger plays, not quicker plays. We had open shots; we just hurried those.”

The West twins (Mackey and Sonny) and Ethan Richardson played their first game after missing the first five games of the season due to a school-related issue...
