When Madera South senior Cristal Rivera signed a National Letter of Intent to run for the Fresno Pacific University cross country and track teams, she was assuring herself the opportunity to do what she loves for another four seasons.
“I love to run because it’s my favorite sport,” Rivera said. “For me, running relieves so much stress and I’ve gained so many friendships by competing in it. I learned so much plus it has built into my character and it’s really helped me to accomplish many things. Since I began running, I really have a great passion for it and the idea of being able to just continue it is amazing.”
Rivera, who was the top female runner for the Stallion cross country team and currently competes in the 800 meter, 1,600 meter and 3,200 meter track events, will join the Sunbirds this fall on an athletic scholarship while majoring in business administration and management.
“I love the idea of being able to attend Fresno Pacific because it’s a Christian-based college and I get to fulfill my running career and education with God, so I think it’s really the best deal,” she said. “I’ve been working really hard since even before I entered middle school to keep up my grades and just kept practicing. I really did enjoy our program a lot because they taught the whole psyche of hard work pays off, and I really do think that in the end it really did pay off. Running the extra mileage is something that I love so much about Madera South. The more that you do, the better it comes out , and every little thing counts. That’s why I’m going to be receiving this great scholarship.”...
