Renteria’s students to test skills in tournament

Facing unfamiliar opponents with different fighting styles, karate students from Renteria’s Martial Art Studio will once again test their skills in the Central Valley Open beginning Saturday morning at Madera South High School.

Nearly 70 students from Renteria’s will participate in the event put on by the Golden State Karate Association — an organization that runs a family-oriented martial art tournament circuit.

For the second year in a row, Renteria’s will host the one-day tournament after a successful showing last season that drew a large crowd.

“The GSKA, which is located in Northern California, wasn’t sure how it was going to work out last year because the tournament was up here in the Central Valley but they really liked it,” said Jose Renteria, the owner and sensei at Renteria’s. “We’ve been participating in their tournaments for so many years and I wanted to bring one of them to Madera. They really liked the big crowd, so we’re trying to make it an annual tourney here. I feel this year’s going to be bigger and expect a lot coming in from the area.” ...
