Racers, fireworks pop at Madera Speedway

In what was labeled as the biggest event of the year at the Madera Speedway, drivers in all divisions put on an impressive show in the televised Fourth of July special.

The Celebration Fireworks/Lucas Oil Modifieds Protect the Harvest California Farmer’s 75 presented by Geico event featured the Spears Southwest Tour 51-Fifty Energy Drink 125 presented by Ameripride Services, Race No. 4 of the LoanMart Open Late Model Series 100 laps, Legends of the the Pacific, SR2 Series, and Race No. 4 of the Open Hobby Stocks Series.

After a fireworks exhibit, the nightcap of the event was the Spears Southwest Tour 125-lap race won by Lakeport’s Derek Thorn, who also won the Tour Series championship in 2012.

In a main that began with 18 competitors on the track, Thorn — in his No. 43 car — was one of three drivers to have a lead in the race and finished ahead of the runner-up Manteca’s Ross Strmiska, and third place finisher Bobby Hodges of Carson City, Nevada, to earn the $3,000 prize on Saturday night...
