When a team is having trouble hitting the ball, airtight defense is a must. The Madera Coyote baseball team did neither of these Tuesday in an 8-0 blanking by the section’s No. 2 ranked Bullard-Fresno Knights (22-7, 13-1).
The Coyotes (15-11, 8-6) managed only two hits — and just five in the past two games — as the Knights’ Fresno State-bound ace Blake Quinn silenced the Madera bats.
But in what is a much more alarming trend, the Coyotes are making routine plays in the field look like an adventure, committing five errors that led directly to six Bullard runs.
“The bottom line is that we are just not a good hitting team,” said Madera head coach Andy Underwood. “And you aren’t going to beat anyone playing defense like we have been, especially against a good team like Bullard..."
