North too much for South All-Stars

MERCED — The 28th annual North/South All-Star Rotary football game was the last chance for Madera County players to suit up and represent their high school team.

In a game that featured a South team with a combined 10 players from Madera, Madera South, and Liberty, it was the North’s squad that rolled to a 40-3 victory Friday in Veterans Stadium at Golden Valley High-Merced.

While the North team scored on three of its four first-half possessions on the way to a 20-0 halftime lead, South’s defense couldn’t fault team captain and outside linebacker Tyler Bates (Madera) or starting cornerback Ranferi Pineda (Madera South).

Bates, who was fresh off leading his team to a win in the City/County All-Star football game on June 22, had another big performance with 10 tackles, including six solo, while Pineda recorded seven along with a pass deflection...
