SELMA — Imagine being a linebacker for the Madera South football team.

Of that unit, the middle linebacker is considered the quarterback of the defense.

Two-year starter Lawrence Mata, a 5-foot-11 200-pound senior, fills that role. He is responsible for not only reading the opposing team’s offense but also making sure the defense is set up to counter it.

Through the first five games of the season, that group of players led by Mata may have had by far the toughest job in the entire Central Section...
