Sam Dougherty gets NAIA Player of theWeek award and Valeria Martinez named to second team

The Master’s College junior Sam Dougherty (Madera) was named the National Association of Interscholastic Athletics’ volleyball player of the week, announced Tuesday.

Dougherty is the final weekly winner for the 2012 season and was selected on her performance from Oct. 29-Nov. 4 and was chosen out of a pool among conference player of the week selections.

Dougherty helped the No. 7 ranked Mustangs to a 3-0 record. In a 3-2 victory over No. 12 Westmont, Dougherty had 14 kills and 20 digs and helped Masters to a 3-1 victory over No. 16 Cal State San Marcos with 21 kills and 14 digs. She also had 16 digs and 9 kills with a season-high 7 aces in a 3-0 win over Arizona Christian on Nov. 3.

In a close five-set loss to top ranked Concordia on Tuesday, Dougherty recorded a game-high 21 kills and 19 digs...
