There have been many obstacles that Madera runner Benny Madrigal has had to overcome in his life.

So when the 2005 Madera High graduate competed in the North Face Endurance Challenge in Washington, D.C., unbearable weather conditions and a brutal running surface were not about to keep Madrigal from winning the marathon he had vigorously trained for.

Madrigal, who runs for Team Novo Nordisk — a global healthcare company that sponsors athletes with diabetes — rose above the challenge and in three hours, 21 minutes and 51 seconds became the course’s record holder for that event on June 1.

It was a big-time win for the former Coyote and Fresno Pacific star runner who discovered he was a Type 1 diabetic in 2009...
