Former Madera Coyote wrestler James Cook of Campbell University knew he was taken lightly heading into the Southern Conference wrestling championships in Lexington, Vir. on March 9.
Cook went into the tournament as the No. 7 seed at 184 pounds and dispatched No. 2 seed Jake Johnson of Appalachian State in the first round. He pinned Josh Tuck of the Citadel in the semifinals.
He won the Southern Conference Championship by winning a 3-2 decision over top seed Robert Prigmore of Tennessee-Chattanooga.
