Madera South star hopes to lead in her 2nd season

Editor’s note: First in a three-part series of Madera athletes returning to college.

She was the school’s first-ever recruit and first-ever All-Conference team selection. Next, she hopes to be a member of the school’s first-ever conference championship team.

Former Madera South volleyball standout and North Yosemite League Most Valuable Player Valeria Martinez earned All-California Pacific Conference first team honors in her first season with the University of California, Merced Bobcats.

Although the Bobcats were 4-13 in their first season in the CalPac, Martinez was the highlight of the team, becoming the only freshman on the All-CalPac first team, even though she wasn’t named Freshman of the Year.

“The first year, it was just me because I was the only recruit,” Martinez said. “We have a few more players, which will help this year.” ...
