Heading into the District 10 Little League All-Stars double elimination tournament, manager Guni Grewal knew that his Madera American 10-11-year-olds team could hit the ball with authority.

River Park American’s defense certainly witnessed that first hand as Madera American pounded out 15 hits including two home runs in Tuesday’s commanding 12-2 tournament-opening victory on Mike Howe Field at Lions Town and Country Park.

“Hitting wise, our kids just did an excellent job today,” Grewal said. “They were very patient and disciplined at the plate. They didn’t swing at too much junk and all their hits were solid ones — the ball just took off.”

Madera American — which will play Reedley tonight at 7 p.m. on Field 1 at Lions Town and Country Park for a spot in the championship round — faced a River Park-Fresno team that was coming off a 16-7 win over Sunnyside-Fresno...
