Madera American 9-10’s rally falls short of goal

Trailing 12-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Madera American Little League 9-10-year-old All-Star team could’ve easily packed it in and allowed Selma to leave town with a 10-run mercy rule victory in the District 10 double elimination tournament.

Instead, Madera American refused to let the game end early and clawed back to push Monday night’s contest to a full six innings in a 16-7 loss to Selma on Mike Howe Field at Lions Town and Country Park.

It was the first loss of the tournament for Madera American, which opened play with a 7-2 win over Madera National on Saturday in Reedley.

In the first two innings, neither team could score a run as Madera American starting pitcher Murf Gray, who struck out five batters in two and 1/3 innings, only allowed one hit and one walk...
