It was a tale of two teams for Madera in the opening games of the eight-under division in the Bobby Sox All-Star Tournament of Champions, which saw the local girls take one game in strong, nearly-flawless fashion but lose the second on numerous errors and unearned runs.

Against North Valley-Milpitas in the morning at Town and Country Park — in an eventual 6-3 win — Madera’s Erika Perez set a tone that home-field advantage would prove a very real element in the team’s matches.

Madera will play at 10 a.m. Monday to decide who will face Salinas in the afternoon’s championship game.

In three innings of work as starting pitcher, Perez struck out six of the eleven batters she faced, allowed no hits, and kept any runners from reaching the plate for scores...
