Madera’s Rams ousted in state tournament

The Fresno City College Rams women’s volleyball team and former Madera players Toni Murphy and Olivia Guillen lost the first two games in bracket play and were eliminated from the 2012 women’s volleyball State Championship on Sunday.

In the first bracket game, a 3-0 loss to Golden West, Murphy had 9 kills and 5 digs. In the elimination game, a 3-0 loss to Santa Rosa, Murphy recorded 10 kills with 8 digs. Guillen recorded a team-high 18 assists with two digs in the match.

At the Nittany Lion Open wrestling tournament on Dec. 2, James Cook (Madera) won his first match of the season with an 8-3 decision at 184 pounds. He advanced to the quarterfinals with a pinfall victory. After a 4-1 loss in the quarters, Cook had to default his next match due to an injury.

Ashley Chavira (Madera) pulled down 3 rebounds in a 75-61 loss to Milligan College for Montreat College on Dec. 1. Chavira scored a point with three rebounds in a 65-49 loss to Vorhees College and finished her week with 3 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in an 85-34 loss to Bennett College...
