Local racing classes ready to shine

After a worldwide televised night of racing last week, the LoanMart Madera Speedway has geared up for local racers to take to the “fastest one-third mile in the West” Saturday night — with at least one series in which one point makes the difference between first and second place.

Tony “The Tiger” Schmitz leads the LunkerDaddy Late Model Series by one point after friendly rival Matt Erickson's transmission broke the last time the series was on the track.

Erickson — typically a first or second place finisher in the class — had to drop out and Schmitz later expressed disappointment that the two didn't get to finish the full race.

Speedway owner Kenny Shepherd said several extra drivers in the LunkerDaddy series are expected to come down from Northern California to race...
