Tournament of Champions to be held at Town and Country Park July 27-29

A perfect storm of tourism will come to Madera this month, with local merchants, hotel workers and restaurateurs already in preparation mode for the influx of capital.

From July 26 to July 29, 42 teams from across the nation — with a minimum of 15 players each — will converge on Madera as the city plays first-time host to the national Bobby Sox softball tournament, the Tournament of Champions.

Altogether, around 1,500 to 2,000 people, including families and friends of the players, are expected to visit Madera those four days, said Debbie Magos, the Madera Bobby Sox official who worked for years to bring the tournament to the city.

Jarrod Lyman, public relations director for the Madera tourism department at the Yosemite Sierra Visitors Bureau, said the event would be one of the largest the city and county have ever seen...
