The last vision in the mind of Liberty’s Ben Cowger was a celebration in the end zone after his first-ever college touchdown for Sacramento State.

Cowger, a redshirt sophomore this season, hopes to build on a promising redshirt freshman season that saw him play behind a player now in the NFL.

“I am working harder and gaining weight,” Cowger said. “I’ve gotten 15 pounds of muscle. I’m working on my speed and footwork and trying to stay mentally tough.”

Cowger recorded seven tackles last season, but the biggest one came in the final game of the season against rival UC Davis on Nov. 19. In the second quarter of a 23-19 loss, UC Davis found itself on its own 12-yard line after a penalty...
