Liberty splits at Renberg Tourney

FRESNO — The Liberty Hawks showed they had the staying power with one of the best teams in the section, but two free kicks led to goals as Liberty went 1-1 Friday on the first day of the Peggy Renberg Tournament at Hoover-Fresno High School.

The Hawks opened the tournament with a 2-0 victory over Clovis West’s junior varsity team and then droped a 2-0 decision to perennial Tri-River Athletic Conference power Clovis in the second match.

“Our plan was to play defensive because we knew they were fast,” head coach Eli Liuba said. “When we saw we could hold them off, we tried to attack more and more. Unfortunately, a free shot and a penalty kick decided the game. The girls stepped up and played hard.”

The Coyotes also played the second game without midfielder Randi Wallace with an injured quad. Starters Briidy Burnell and Julie Liuba also left the game with illness, but later returned...
