Liberty passes first test of season against Stallions

Madera South’s top girls tennis player recorded two victories, but it was the Liberty Hawks that came out with the victory in a non-league match at Liberty.

The Hawks, who are two-time Division V Valley champions, got strong play from the rest of their team for a 7-2 victory Tuesday over the Stallions.

Five of the top six of Liberty’s ladder played in last year’s title match. The Hawks went undefeated last year in claiming the Division V crown and will now try to win their third straight title, but in Division IV.

“We lost a lot of great players, including my doubles partner Eunice Castro from last year,” Liberty No. 2 singles player Annie Erickson said. “However, we got a lot of new girls and they are eager to get better. We want to be higher than last year and that means we have to keep going for a third title.” ...
