Liberty falls short in tourney opener

REEDLEY — By the time the Liberty Hawks boys basketball team could blink, they found themselves trailing 13-0 in the Immanuel Boys Basketball Tournament opener Tuesday.

The Hawks trailed 17-2 before Maxx Lopez scored on a layup for Liberty’s first field goal of the game. The Hawks got a bucket from DeAndre Smith and a free throw from Anthony Garza, but the Lindsay Cardinals kept up the pace for a 27-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

However, from the third quarter on, the Hawks gave the Cardinals a game in a 70- 56 loss. The rest of the way, the Hawks outscored the Cardinals 47-43.

“I’m glad with the way we came out in the third quarter, first-year head coach Ken Vossler said. “We like to go up-tempo, but we need bodies. We finally got the football players on Monday, but I was impressed with Lindsay.” ...
