Liberty comes from behind for victory

Heading into the three doubles matches in the Div. IV semifinals, all the No. 10 seeded Delano Tigers had to do was get one win and they would upset the No. 2 seed and last year’s Div. IV runner-up, the Liberty Hawks girls tennis team, in the quarterfinals of the Div. IV Central Section playoffs.

The Hawks wouldn’t give in. Their three doubles teams dominated play Wednesday and when the No. 1 doubles team of Renee Ortega and Maritza Rivera came off the court with a 6-3, 6-4 victory, the Hawks were headed to the Div. IV semifinals with a 5-4 victory at Liberty.

“The girls really surprised us by showing the toughness and resiliency to win all three doubles matches when we needed it most,” head coach Greg Ruland said. “These girls are fighters who never give up.”

The Hawks stepped up their game at the right time. In doubles, the Liberty teams lost just 12 out of the 36 games to pull out the needed sweep...
