After shutting down the Reedley Dodgers, 2-0, on a combined perfect game from pitchers Nikayha Castro and Nate Martinez in its District 10 Tournament of Champions opener, the Madera American Little League Majors champ Lee’s Concrete (21-5) met River Park American champs, Giants, with a trip to the title game on the line.
In the TOC semifinals on Mike Howe Field at Lions Town and Country Park, the Giants overcame an early 7-2 deficit and scored six unanswered runs including the game-deciding one in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Lee’s 8-7 on Thursday night.
Although the loss ended Lee’s season, manager Guni Grewal was pleased with how his team performed against a Giants squad loaded with 11 and 12-year-old players.
“I’m very happy with my players,” Grewal said. “We have some 9-year-olds on our team but we still fought hard against River Park and took them to extra innings. We rallied there at the end and if we would’ve put one more player on base, we had the top of our batting order coming up and anything could’ve happened.” ...
