The quote, “You play ball like a girl,” from “The Sandlot” baseball movie doesn’t quite have the same insulting intent for 12-year-old Madera National Little League All-Star Ellyssa Varela.

In fact, the very competitive Varela is making a statement that anybody — regardless of gender — can play with best of them, if they have the skills and work ethic.

Varela — who led Purl’s Sheet Metal in hits (24), runs (17) and RBIs (11) this season — proved she was worthy of an All-Star selection to be on the same team with dominant players such as Christian Chavira, Brixton Gomes, Issac Chavira of the City Champions and MNLL champion McDonald’s, along with four-time All-Star Matthew Alvarez (Breakfast Lions).

The multi-sport athlete Varela is the only female out of both Madera National and Madera American Leagues to make all-stars in many years and will lead the MNLL team into Reedley tomorrow for its opening game of the District 10 tournament...
