Inside the game: Tulare Western Mustangs 38, Madera Coyotes 21

As the third quarter wound down, Madera cut back the Mustang lead to 24-21 on a 70-yard power score by Jesus Jimenez. However, Tulare Western drove back down the field and, when facing a second-and-nine situation, Mustangs quarterback Kobe Portillo delivered a perfect pass to Noah Salazar in the middle of triple coverage.

Salazar somehow managed to make the grab even as he was hit on all sides by the three Coyote defenders, which set up Portillo for the easy one-yard quarterback sneak touchdown a play later.

Late in the second quarter, Madera got the ball back after a Tulare Western score down 14-17 on their own 29-yard line.

Head coach Bonner Cunnings, in a move indicative of his self-described “get out there and go for it” style of play, elected to try and get into scoring range with only 47 seconds left on the clock...
