High expectations for Coyotes

When Madera Coyote girls volleyball coach Robyn Royston came to the team two years ago, she led the Coyotes to the Div. II Valley Championship.

Two years later, Royston thinks she may have a better team than that Valley Championship team. What helps is that seven of the 10 players returned from last year’s team motivated by a first round Div. I exit.

“I think teams are going to be surprised with how good we are,” said Royston, who got married over the summer and changed her name from Keune. “We did really well in our scrimmages and beat some of the Tri-River Athletic Conference schools. It was really exciting.”

The Coyotes officially open the season today in the Clovis Varsity Challenge at 2 p.m. in the Granite Ridge Intermediate School gymnasium on the Clovis North campus, at 2770 E. International Ave. They have pool play against Stockdale-Bakersfield, Central Valley Christian-Visalia and Golden West- Visalia. Play continues Saturday...
