CLOVIS — Behind a six-run seventh inning, the Liberty Hawks softball team finished the first day of the Clovis Easter Softball Classic with a 2-0 record after victories Saturday over Cesar Chavez-Delano and Hanford.
The Hawks used a three-run second inning for a 4-2 victory over Cesar Chavez in their first game of the tournament at the Buchanan Softball Complex. Cassidy Santa Cruz picked up the win in the circle, tossing four innings. She struck out one and allowed two runs.
Hannah Shevenell seemed to return to her own self with a dominating performance in the second game. Shevenell pitched the final two innings against Chavez, recording the save. She then pitched a complete-game one-hitter in a 7-1 victory in the nightcap against Hanford. She struck out eight and walked one in the win.
“It helps a lot. We were in a dogfight in this one and finished strong,” assistant coach Darrell Graham said. “We got behind a run, got back and erupted for six runs. These wins helped a lot. Hannah looked fresh to me. She had her velocity and pitched very well.” ...
