While the weather was cold, windy and rainy, the only thing that was heating up were the Liberty Hawk softball bats in a 10-0 mercy-rule victory Friday over the Selma Bears to capture the team’s fourth straight Division V championship.
There was never a doubt in the 10-0 victory. The second seeded Hawks scored six runs in the first inning and Hannah Shevenell closed the door on the fourth seeded Bears. Renee Ortega and Caitlyn McShane each drove in three runs in the 11-hit attack. Randi Wallace highlighted the offense with a solo home run in the third.
“Getting the early lead was the most important thing,” Ortega said. “I was relaxed and kept my head in the game. We brought our game up from there. We played the rest of the game on a high note.”
