After two runner-up finishes in previous trips to the Central Section Div. V championship match, Liberty boys tennis coach Nolon Doss — who took over the team in 2008 — could finally rejoice in his program’s third attempt at a Valley title.
The No. 2 seeded Hawks picked up the Div. V championship plaque Thursday with a 8-1 road victory at No. 1 Selma in a rematch of last season’s semifinals, which was won by the Bears, 5-4.
The Hawks, who finished Div. V runner-up in 2008 and 2010, were able to break through with a gutsy performance as they claimed only the third boys’ Valley Championship in school history with the baseball team (2009) and football team (2012) winning before.
“The bad news is I’m graduating six seniors off an eight-man squad,” Doss said. “These boys that have been with me two to four years have really stepped up and they had their eye on the goal and got the job done. There’s no better feeling for them.” ...
