Hawks ready to soar over Aztecs

The Liberty Hawks football team is ready to live up to the early-season accolades with its season opener tonight against the Farmersville Aztecs.

The Hawks are the top ranked team in Division V and return their top three rushers from last season — Sam McHatton, A.J. Leon and Brandon Hutchings — who combined for more than 3,000 yards.

“We’ve had some good practices and have gone over the looks,” head coach Mike Nolte. “We are ready for the looks we will see tonight.”

Farmersville was the second seed in last year’s Division IV playoffs and lost in the championship game to top-seed Mendota. The Aztecs were led by freshman quarterback Sam Metcalf. He threw for nearly 3,000 yards and 22 touchdowns. However, he broke his foot two weeks ago at practice and won’t be able to start the season...
