Hawks kick way to ‘ship

Who would have thought that in a season that produced 51 touchdowns for the Liberty Hawks, their game to send them to the best kind of ship — a championship — would rely on field goals?

Four of them, to be exact, off the leg of Seth Wedemeyer and a touchdown run sent the top-seeded Hawks to their third straight Div. V Section Championship game, this year against the No. 2 seeded Mendota Aztecs on Friday at Liberty.

Wedemeyer and the Liberty defense helped lift the Hawks to a 19-10 victory over the No. 4 seeded Lindsay Cardinals on Friday in the Div. V semifinals at Liberty.

“Inside of 40 yards, Seth is pretty good,” Liberty head coach Mike Nolte said. “He kicked the ball off real well and allowed our special teams to make a play. We worked a lot on that last week and it paid off. The special teams played really well. When you get to this time of the year, you have to be good in all three phases.” ...
