Hawks get a scare in tennis victory

The Liberty Hawks girls tennis team has had a rather easy time in the North Sequoia League, winning the last 24 of its last 25 matches over a three season span.

Only a handful of times in that streak have the Hawks been tested. Liberty extended its NSL winning streak to 16 matches, but it came with some drama with a 5-4 victory over Sierra on Thursday.

The Hawks won four of the six singles matches and needed a win in doubles for the match win. The No. 1 doubles team of Jordyn DeChamplain and Bethany Buchnoff came away with an 8-1 victory to clinch to match for the Hawks. It was fortunate as the No. 2 and 3 doubles teams suffered big losses.

“Sometimes you win ugly,” head coach Greg Ruland said. “We have one player out because of injury and two players not at 100 percent who are playing with injuries. That is starting to show as many of our players didn’t play sharp tennis.”...
