Hawks finish second in tourney

A night after losing to the eventual champions, the Liberty Hawks boys basketball team rebounded for a 65-39 victory over Orange Cove to place second in the eighth annual Hawks Classic at Liberty.

However, it was the game against Caruthers, which won the tournament, that was the deciding factor Friday night.

In all 66 fouls were called, seven players were disqualified with five personal fouls, and there were 106 whistles in the game for an average of a whistle every 18 seconds of game time in an 87-73 Caruthers victory.

“They said Caruthers is one of the best teams in our division,” head coach Ken Vossler said. “We have a chance to play with anybody. It kills the pace of the game. Every possession was a foul. I know what they are trying to do to clean it up. The game was called equally. There’s a vast improvement from last year to this year. If we can withstand foul trouble, we can be a great team.” ...
