FRESNO — In the final game of the Fresno Central Classic, the Liberty Hawk baseball team took on the defending Central Section Division III champion Hanford West.
The Hawks took a 1-0 lead but the Huskies took advantage of six hits, three Liberty errors, four walks and two hit batters in a 9-2 win Saturday at Fresno High.
“They made the plays and did what they had to do to win,” Liberty coach Martin Carvalho said. “When they were hitting, they put the bat on the ball, got good jumps on the bases and just played a complete game.”
It was the first time this season that Liberty, a D-IV team, faced a defending section champion. Hanford West went 23-11 last season under fifth-year coach Michael Remy, whose team knocked out the top two seeds of last year’s D-III playoffs...
