Hawks fall to comeback

The No. 4 seeded Liberty Hawk baseball team seemed to have things under control with a 6-4 lead heading into the seventh inning of its Division IV quarterfinal playoff game.

No. 5 seed Chowchilla had other ideas, though. The Redskins sent eight batters to the plate, banged out five hits, including a two-run triple from Kelby Grissom, to score five runs in a 9-6 victory Thursday to end the Hawks’ season. The Redskins pulled out a 2-1 victory on May 11 over the Hawks in the North Sequoia League finale.

Liberty pitcher Tyler Cookson had a four-hitter going into the fourth, but allowed three hits in the seventh before Connor Brogdon came on in relief. Brogdon, who struck out 17 in a win Tuesday, allowed two more runs on two hits.

“I put the blame on myself,” head coach Martin Carvalho said. “I should have brought in Connor at the beginning of the inning.” ...
