Nolon Doss, Liberty High School boys’ tennis coach for the last five years, doesn’t let anything get in the way of improving himself or his players.
A self-described football coach teaching tennis, Doss is not shy about his coaching philosophy or the attitude he expects of his team.
“I’m not the most politically-correct guy,” Doss said. “I’ve got these coaching books and they’re all about ‘everybody gets a chance’ kind of deal but I still believe you’ve got to compete, and compete to win … nothing’s given to you for free, you’ve got to earn it.”
Since taking over the tennis in program in 2008 while remaining the school’s junior varsity football coach since 2004, Doss has led the Hawks to a 79-27 record and three North Sequoia League championships and one Northwest Sierra League, with the fourth sealed in a crushing 10-0 win Thursday over Kerman.
