Hawks advance after five-set win

The Liberty Hawks girls volleyball team managed to fend off the determined Fowler Redcats, 3-2, in their first-round Div. IV playoff game, taking two straight sets after falling behind 2-1 and staring down their season’s end with the score tied 14-14 in the final set.

Liberty (15-14, 7-3 NSL) beat Fowler (21-9, 10-0 WSL) twice this season, a 3-0 shutout in September and a 2-1 victory in the Madera Classic tournament.

But on Tuesday night, the Redcats came to play and took the fight to the Hawks, using a 10-point rally to win the third set 25-20 and a take a 2-1 lead.

“I feel like Fowler played a great game,” Liberty head coach Mike MacNeill said. “But there’s something to be said for heart and something to be said for never giving up. It takes a special team to be able to come back like we did.”...
