Former Madera Coyote shortstop Alec Mehrten claims to have the best job in the world — he gets to wake up everyday and call a baseball diamond his office.

Mehrten, a 2008 Madera High graduate and four-year starter for the Fresno Pacific University baseball team, is getting ready for his first full-season as a professional baseball player.

“It’s still kind of hard to believe,” Mehrten said about calling himself a pro. “That’s what it is if you have to put a title on it. Playing baseball as a job is the best. You get to wake up and go to your baseball field as your office.”

Mehrten is finally taking some time off the field before getting ready to go to Scottsdale, Ariz. for spring training with the Colorado Rockies...
