Sophomore sets school record for 3’s
Madera Coyote girls basketball sophomore Bria Fernandes scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Coyotes to a 40-26 victory over the Sanger Apaches.
Fernandes set the Coyote school record for 3-pointers in a season with 68 when she sank her third 3-pointer in the second quarter Tuesday night. Fernandes finished with five 3-pointers to go with four steals. Heather Bates set the record in 2004 with 65.
The Coyotes’ defense held Sanger in check for most of the game. The Apaches scored just one point in the first quarter and didn’t reach double-digits until midway through the third quarter. Sanger made just six field goals in the game and didn’t make its first second half field goal until midway through the fourth quarter.
“The third quarter, we came out strong,” head coach Jason Smith said. “I was really proud of that. It is really hard to stay in an offensive rhythm where every time we go up to contest a shot, there’s a foul called. It’s hard when the whistle is blowing every time on a shot. We have to make adjustments whether we agree or not.”...
