Express competes among best

The Central Cal Express wiffle ball team went 1-4 at the Golden State Wiffle League National Fastpitch Tournament while competing against some of the top teams in the nation on Oct. 19 and 20 in Savannah, Ga.

“We made a very respectable showing,” manager Jerry Lutz said. “We are considered an amateur team even though we received the second bid out of the West for this tourney. The teams we faced were very good and there were even better teams.”

Considered the national championship, the Express received a bid by placing second in the region.

Former Central-Fresno High School player Danny De la o struck out 25 batters in two games and hit a home run in a 2-1 loss to the No. 2 team in the nation, New York State of Mind. New York eventually advanced to the championship before losing a 2-1 game...
