The LoanMart Madera Speedway saw increased car counts and close finishes Saturday in an emotional night that paid tribute to fallen driver and official Jeff Doran.
Doran — who passed away earlier this year unexpectedly due to health issues — was a well-known figure at the track for his outspoken style, both while driving in the Toyota Sedans and MST classes, and as an official not afraid to put drivers in their place.
“Loved him or hated him, he was a guy that you respected,” said Del McIntosh, a driver who competes in the Toyota Sedans class. “He was a track official for 10 years and loved to torment the racers. Then he became a racer for over 10 years and loved to torment the officials!”
Speedway owner Kenny Shepherd said he wanted to show respect for Doran, and a sponsorship from Century 21 M&M of Madera — which brought ticket prices down to $5 — helped him in that goal...
