Custer leads the way in 100-lap race

Though it was only his second-ever race at the Madera Speedway, 14-year-old rookie driver Cole Custer seemed to own the track again as he dominated Race No. 5 of the $1,000 to win Coors Light Open Late Model Series 100 Laps on Saturday.

In the Open Late Model 100-lap (Split 50’s) main, Custer repeated what he did in his last trip to Madera on May 19 to pick up his second win and add to his prize-earning total of now $2,000.

“It’s awesome to come back here and get two in a row,” Custer said. “It felt great and I love this track. I think it’s awesome to race on and the fans here are great.”

Custer took the lead on the first lap and, despite seven cautions — including a redflag that stopped the race on Lap 54 — continued to lead the 17-car field...
