FRESNO — The venue may not have been the same, but the results were exactly what the Madera Coyotes were looking for.

The No. 2 seeded Coyotes, playing in their first Valley Championship since they won the Valley title in 1996 at Beiden Field, held the top-seeded San Joaquin Memorial Panthers scoreless to capture the Div. II Central Section championship Friday at Memorial.

The Coyotes scored six runs in the first two innings and let their pitching do the rest. Starting pitcher Scotty Roberts tossed five innings of three-hit ball with six strikeouts to pick up the win. He was held to five innings after throwing five innings on Wednesday. In high school, pitchers are limited to 10 innings a week.

Sophomore Alec Gamboa came in and finished the job, allowing two hits in three innings with three strikeouts, including one on the final batter...
