If Madera Coyote girls basketball coach Jason Smith has any more games like the one against Buchanan, he might have to purchase defibrillator machines, not only for himself, but for the parents as well.

For the second straight home game, the Coyotes went down to the wire with their opponent. This time, it came down to a freshman to make her first-ever buzzer-beating bucket for a 58-57 victory over Tri-River Athletic Conference’s Buchanan-Clovis on Wednesday in Joe Flores Gym.

Everyone in the gym knew Bria Fernandes was going to get the ball at the end of the game with Madera trailing 57-56 after Buchanan was called for an offensive foul with 13.4 seconds left.

However, three people thought differently — Fernandes, Smith and freshman center Alyssa Burton...
