Just call him Mr. Clutch. With two outs and the bases loaded, Madera sophomore Alec Gamboa was able to deliver the game-winning RBI single to right field in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Coyotes pulled out a 3-2 win Friday night over the defending Div. II section champion Edison-Fresno Tigers on Mel Parker Field.

The Coyotes improved to 3-0 in the County/Metro Athletic Conference and will travel to Clovis East today to face the Timberwolves at 10 a.m. in the Fresno Easter Baseball Classic.

In his fourth at-bat against Edison starting pitcher Deondre Howard — a senior lefty — Gamboa threw a change-up of his own.

“In his first three at-bats he was batting from the right side,” Coyote head coach Andy Underwood said. “He’s a switch-hitter and we’re working with him both ways. From the right side, he’s a little bit weaker but we told him to pick whatever side he wanted to. He went out there on the left side against Howard for a lefty-lefty match up.” ...
