The Madera Coyotes girls basketball team held a fourpoint lead with a little more than two minutes left in its Div. II quarterfinal game in Joe Flores Gym.
However, the Coyotes committed three turnovers and missed their last three shots and their four-point lead turned into a 49-46 loss Thursday to Independence-Bakersfield.
“We panicked in the end,” head coach Jason Smith said. “We would have never been in that position if we rebounded the ball better.”
The key play in the turnaround occurred on a free throw with the Coyotes leading 46-43 with 2:13 left in the game. Independence’s Kennedy Sweet missed a second free throw, but Ebony Hammond beat the Coyotes to the rebound and was fouled on the put-back. She made the free throw to tie the score 46-46...
