While powerhouse wrestling teams Vacaville and Gilroy duked it out in the 5th annual Chukchansi Invitational, it was three teams from the County/Metro Athletic Conference that posted respectable top-10 finishes in the 57-team tournament at Madera South.
The Madera Coyotes and Madera South Stallions totaled 119 points as both teams placed eighth while Sanger (159.5) finished fifth in the two-day tournament that was won by Vacaville, which edged out Gilroy High (280-279.5) to claim the title on Saturday.
Madera South head coach Jason Gaeth-Pearce, who has been instrumental in organizing the tournament since it first began in 2009, was pleased with not only the performance from his team but the overall outcome of the invitational.
“It went fantastic and any time you have some of the best teams in the state wrestling at your event, it’s a pretty neat deal,” he said. “The team race between Vacaville and Gilroy to win it all came down to a half of a point and that was pretty cool. With our team, I don’t ever think we’ve been that close to Madera at a tournament this early in the season and it was nice to see that we’re neck-and-neck with them right now.” ...
